NAMES

just came to my attention that with 2 spiderlings this blog could get confusing so its time to name the little beasts.

first off a little bit of info about the new spiderling

(Brachypelma albopilosum) Curlyhair Tarantula

Curlyhair Tarantulas have gold and tan hairs covering their bodies. The legs are a darker brown, in contrast to the practically bronze carapace. This comes out to be one fine-looking spider without being exceedingly colorful. Also, true to their common name, most Curlyhair Tarantulas have hair that looks curly (actually more wavy than curvy, but we'll let that slide). They are very hardy tarantulas that make lasting pets. They also make great "show" spiders since they can be taken out and handled, although handling should not take place frequently because there's always the possibility of the tarantula falling off your hand and splitting it's abdomen open (likely fatal). Curlyhair Tarantulas seem to have more personality (tarantulality) than the conventional starter species

here is a pic of what he may look like when fully grown.

anyway back to the names.

my first spiderling aka Chaco golden knee is now going to be know as: TOCOT

sounds a bit crazy but its the name of a Mayan spider god!!

and the new addition aka Curlyhair kis now called: fluffy

yes i did.....tocot and fluffy....well he is hairier already

delivery arrives at last

well the delivery finaly arived today.

i havent posted recently becuse there was nothing special going on. just the usual routine of feeding the spiderling.

so i opened the box while getting ready for work (it arrived at 8:30) first things first i dived straight for the new spider......YEH new spider.

lets explain this...well im weak and he was cheap so i couldn't help my self i ordered a curly haired T.

he scared me a little when i opened the tub. was expecting a spider smaller than my current one witch is 1-2cm, he was easily 3cm not bad for a "1cm spiderling".
After inspecting the new spiderling i set about getting the bedding ready, i dampened it and installed it into the 2 homes. added a hidey hole with a bit of an egg carton and away we go.

i added a few of the pinhead cricket before i left...they really are just that possibly to small for both my spiderlings now (my other one has been eating house flyes witch are about as big as him).

will post again after work with pics of the new homes and how i go about setting up the crickets.

12/11/07 delayed again

now the mail order company are telling me that it may take another week for delivery.

this ain't on considering i paid for next day before 9.......

looks like i might have to order else where and cancel my order. don't think the spiderling can wait for another week for food.

though having said that he has been reluctant to eat recently, maybe he is getting ready for shedding his skin

10/11/09 spider info

thought id add a little info about my spiderling

Grammostola aureostriata

AKA the Chaco golden knee

It tends to be one of the more docile species and therefore makes an attractive pet. The Chaco is also quite flashy in appearance, bearing long light-colored hairs all over its body and gold stripes on its legs, particularly at the knees.

found a picture of what he might look like when fully grown

but thats going to take a few years

10/11/07 food taken

well the little spiderling didn't mind too much that i already killed its prey.

went to change the damp tissue and ....surprise surprise he had eaten the fly.. well in the process.

always when im not looking. lol

10/11/07 weblinger

i open the spiderlings box today just to check on him and the little dude has webbed up part of the tub. its a very fine coating wouldn't have expected so much from the little guy.

i tryed to photo the webbing but it doesn't really show on my camera.

you can however spot his next meal caught it this morning may have swatted it a bit to hard as it seemed dead as i put it in. ( ive read T's will go for freshly killed prey so if he hasn't eaten it by this eve i will remove it from the tub

09/11/07 box modifications

just did a quick spruce up on his box.

secured the cables down so his enclosure doesn't move when the box is.

and also changed the insulation to make it easier to access without massive disruption.

during this little change around i put the spiderling in his tub to one side ... fly still there hadnt touched it.

then as i put him back in im wondering wherethe fly has gone......under the spiderling missed it.

he is now huddled in the corner where the temp sensor curles over (will have bedding material soon when this dam delayed order arrives)

09/11/07 Feeding time

well i added the fly into the spiderlings tub. ..

he wasn't to impressed he wandered over took a look and then scarpered when the fly buzzed its wings.

after 5mins waiting i took a quick photo and left him to it.

the 2 little bugs were also introduced i removed them as he didn't like them.

09/11/07 Hunting for food

well i decided i need to hunt down some more food for my spiderling.

Luckly while at work a pretty dozy fly got swatted my me and put in the little tub the spiderling was shipped in.

it will make a tasty meal for later... (will try and post a pic of the spider chowing down)

08/11/07 bk from the pub...hic hic

after getting back from the pub even later on i decided it was high time to feed my little critter.

Lucky as i was getting rid of some extra fluids in the bathroom i spied a very small house spider. well i hadnt seen any outer bugs about so it had to do.

my spiderling was a bit timid when i dropped the spider in. 9mostly because of removing the lid i think)

but he quickly dispatched and ate the house spider.

08/11/07 later that evening

now i had a slight problem. my food and heatmat was ordered with another website and is not coming till mid next week due to a delay.

he was fine for now with the heat pad that came in the packing

so i had to get the little bugger a set up providing the right heat.

nerd impulses took over at this point and i managed to bodge up a temp gauge and a heater in one.

simple set up just a power charger with a standard pc power outlet. then plugged into a fan controller from an old pc case.

the temp sensor for the cpu went in with the spiderling. obviously i didn't add any fans ....lol

then i just got him the right distance away with a bit of insulation. and he was toasty.

here is the finished heat box.. it was reading 26.8 here but it leveled out at 27 a nice temp for the little guy.

08/11/07 spiderling arives

well i expected the spiderling to arrive urly before 9am so i could set it up for the day before going to work.

well roalmail wasn't that quick..

so later in the day after work i got back and there it was a small box, waiting for me.

he was packaged in a small tub with air holes.

his whole leg span say about 2cm.
